A multiage classroom is when two or more grade levels have been intentionally placed together to IMPROVE learning.  It is NOT teaching separate grade level curriculums like in a combination classroom.  Children of different ages are taught in the same classroom without dividing them or the curriculum into steps labeled by "grade" levels.  Students make continuous progress rather that being "promoted" once a year.

Benefits of a Multiage Classroom

  • Because students vary in their rates of intellectual  as well as physical and social developments, students work at their own maximum pace. Their learning can be adjusted over a two-year period.
  • A child of low scholastic ability is able to take longer that usual to progress without repetition of a whole year's work.
  • Accelerated students can progress at a faster pace without grade barriers.
  • School/home cooperation is strengthened when teachers and parents know each other over a two-year period.
  • Second year students develop leadership, responsibility, and self reliance.
  • First year students follow the social maturity of the second year students.
  • The students have opportunities to lead and to cooperate in different situations.  They also have the opportunity to develop stable peer relationships with a wider age group.
